Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you might want to know about how this site is built, ranked, and maintained.
How is the Top 100 ranking determined?
We synthesize the most respected published rankings — Golf Digest's America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses, Golfweek's Best Classic and Modern Courses, and GOLF Magazine's Top 100 in the U.S. — and weight courses by appearances and recency. The result is a consensus ranking, not the opinion of any single panel.
How often is the list updated?
Major rankings publish on roughly two-year cycles. We refresh our consensus whenever a primary source publishes, and we revise individual course pages as renovations and tournament news warrant.
Can the public play these courses?
Most are private clubs, but a meaningful number are public or resort courses — Pebble Beach, Bandon Dunes, Bethpage Black, Whistling Straits, Streamsong, Pinehurst No. 2 and others. Use the Access filter on the map to see only those open to the public.
How do I find tee times?
Each course profile links to the official course website when one is publicly available. If we couldn't verify a working link, the button instead opens a Google search for the course so you can find the most current information.
Are the map locations exact?
Coordinates are accurate to within the course property. Markers are intended for orientation, not navigation — please consult the official course website for directions and gate access.
Why is course X ranked above course Y?
Rankings are inherently subjective. We follow the consensus of the published panels — disagreements are common, and that's part of the fun.
Can I submit a correction?
Yes — email hello@topcourses.golf with the course name and the correction. We're particularly grateful for design-credit clarifications and tournament additions.
Is topcourses.golf affiliated with any tour or club?
No. We're an independent reference site. Mentions of the Masters Tournament, PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and named clubs are factual references — there is no affiliation, partnership, or endorsement.
