History
Oakmont Country Club, built by industrialist Henry Fownes in 1903 northeast of Pittsburgh, is the most U.S. Open-tested course in history. Fownes designed Oakmont to be intentionally severe — its lightning-fast greens, deep church-pew bunkers, and relentless rough regularly produce the highest scoring averages of any major venue. The course has hosted a record nine U.S. Opens, four PGA Championships, and three U.S. Amateurs. Johnny Miller's final-round 63 in the 1973 U.S. Open and Tiger Woods' 2000 record remain among the most astonishing performances in major championship history.
