History
Cherry Hills Country Club in Englewood, designed by William Flynn in 1922 near Denver, is the site of two of golf's most dramatic moments. Arnold Palmer's legendary 1960 U.S. Open charge — driving the 1st green in the final round and making seven birdies in the first seven holes — is perhaps the most celebrated back nine in major championship history. The course sprawls at 5,280 feet elevation, providing an extra 10 percent carry distance. It is the highest-elevation course to have hosted a U.S. Open, and Bob Nicklaus's 1978 PGA victory here also stands as a memorable championship.
