History

Garden City Golf Club, laid out by Devereux Emmet in 1899 and revised by Walter Travis, sits on the flat Long Island plain and is among the oldest courses in America to still resemble its original character. Travis revised the layout to increase strategic demand, and the result is a course that plays longer and trickier than its modest topography suggests. Its par-73 routing with natural sandy lies instead of rough reflects early American links ideals. The club hosted the 1902 U.S. Amateur — Travis's first of three victories — and is considered essential on any Long Island golf pilgrimage.
