History

Shinnecock Hills is one of the five founding clubs of the USGA and one of the nation's oldest courses. Established in 1891 on Long Island's South Fork, it was substantially redesigned by William Flynn in 1931 using the land's natural treeless, wind-swept topography to create a near-links experience on American soil. The course's exposed fairways, fescue-clad hills, and punishing rough demand precise shot-making. Shinnecock has hosted six U.S. Opens, most recently in 2018, and is universally cited for the authenticity of its challenge — often compared favorably to the finest links courses of Scotland and Ireland.
