History
Winged Foot's West Course, designed by A.W. Tillinghast and opened in 1923 in Westchester County, is one of the definitive championship tests in American golf. Tillinghast — who called it his best work — created a course of muscular par 4s, deep-faced bunkers, and severely contoured greens that have consistently produced drama in major championships. The West Course has hosted six U.S. Opens, including Hale Irwin's 1974 Massacre at Winged Foot, Fuzzy Zoeller's 1984 playoff, and Bryson DeChambeau's 2020 victory. Its long demanding par-4s and punishing rough have humbled virtually every champion.
