History
TPC Sawgrass was Pete Dye's revolutionary response to the PGA Tour's desire for a permanent headquarters course — a design specifically crafted for spectators with massive earthwork mounding and dramatic island greens. Opening in 1982 as a venue for The Players Championship, the Stadium Course's iconic 17th hole — an island green par-3 — became the most feared hole in professional golf, consuming hundreds of golf balls each year. Dye's combination of forced carries, swales, and tiered greens created a demanding test simultaneously fair and devastating.
