History
Winged Foot's East Course, designed simultaneously with the West by A.W. Tillinghast in 1923, is a shorter but no less demanding companion. Tillinghast's mastery of green complexes is equally visible here, with bold contours and deep-faced bunkers demanding equally precise approach play. The East is widely respected as an exceptional course in its own right — not merely the West's understudy — and has hosted two U.S. Women's Opens. Recent renovations have elevated the East back to near-parity with its famous sibling in the major rankings.
